What's Happening
There is a wonderful interview with Polly Wiessner in the New York Times describing how the Bushmen survive where resources are scarce and unpredictable.  "They have an intricate system of banking their social relationships and calling on them when times get rough. The system is maintained through gift-giving, storytelling and visiting. It works like insurance does in our culture... [people visit people with whom they exchange gifts] and the "gifts are their way of telling the receiver,  'I’ve held you in my heart'."   Read the interview.

Did the Sundance Kid die along with Butch Cassidy in South America or did he live to a ripe old age in Utah?  Watch Anthropology Professor John McCullough tell KSL TV  news the answer.

Check out the new book by Harpending and Cochran,  The 10,000 Year Explosion:  How Civilization Accelerated Human Evolution.    Some of the research that went into the book is described in this University press release.

There is a good article in Scientific American about the Evolution of Human Aggression conference held here Feb 2009.   The article is called "Taming Humanity's Urge to War" .

If you are a medical professional, we would love to hear from you and get your advice about our health emphasis program.   It is new and we are working to improve it.  The people who know best how to train anthro grads to be successful health professionals are people who've been there and done it, so we are actively soliciting advice.   Please send an email to me, This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it , (chair of the anthro department) or give me a call at 801-581-4672 so that we can talk about it.   Thank you!

Support Anthropology

Our highest funding priority is always our students, and we appreciate your support. Every gift counts.

The Robert Anderson Graduate Fellowship honors the memory of one of the department's outstanding teachers. This endowed fellowship is used to attract and support outstanding graduate students in the early years of their study.

The Anthropology Department Gift Account may be used for a variety of departmental activities. Unless otherwise designated, money donated to the gift account will be used for student support.
