Master of Philosophy

Master of Philosophy

The M.Phil degree requires the same qualifications for admission and scholarly achievement as the Ph.D. degree but does not require a doctoral dissertation. As such, it is basically a formalization of what is known informally as the "ABD" (all-but-dissertation).

Students are not admitted for the M.Phil because our intent is for all Ph.D. students to complete the dissertation and get the Ph.D. degree. However, a student who becomes unable to complete the dissertation, or decides against doing so, should consider applying for the M.Phil degree if all other Ph.D. requirements have been completed.

The degree requirements for the M.Phil are described here.
