Description

In this course students learn about the biological basis of cooperation and competition in animals. We use these principles to understand how we grow up, choose and attract mates, and take care of our children. The course provides students with a basic understanding of evolutionary ecology, scientific methods for testing hypotheses about how humans evolved, and human diversity.

Evolution of Human Nature is an introductory course with no prerequisites.

Readings

There is no formal text book for this course. Instead students read about 30 short articles from periodicals such as Scientific American and the books The Selfish Gene (by R. Dawkins) and Women of the Forest (by Y. Murphy and R. Murphy).

Requirements

Spring 2008 there will be three quizzes, a comprehensive final exam during final exam week, and a book report.
